Yo! Time to represent!
Jun. 23rd, 2009 10:55 amI'm sorry. I swore I wouldn't talk like that anymore.
But we do need to have a sitdown here. You, and you, and you, and especially you- allayas who contributed mightily to my last downward death spiral into Showtime with the likes of one Dexter Morgan. I have one question:
Why aren't you- why is NOBODY- going gaga over the newness and wonder and faboo-litity that is Nurse Jackie on Monday nights on the SHO?
This is cut from the same cloth, people. The writing, the interactions, the massive quantities of fake blood, but especially the turmoil in the life and the mind and the actions of the main character. She hasn't chopped anyone to pieces, other than with her sarcasm, but she's that same kind of anti-hero hero that you wouldn't want to bring home to Mom and Dad but you secretly love anyway.
Until yesterday, you could Netflix the premiere and stream it for no additional charge. You would then run, not walk, to your local provider to get a $12.95 a month addon to watch the next three months, for which Showtime will rebate you $25 once you've acquired and sent in three bills with their name on it. (Plus you get all of Dexter's past eps on demand, before S3 comes out on DVD, as a throw-in.)
Who's with me?
::hears crickets::
Okay. Here are my theories. Which I have and which are mine and I have them, too.
(1) The overwhelming majority of the fanning-types in my world here are fangirls, and fangirls don't fangirl over girls. (Try saying THAT three times fast.) Not that it's stopped any of you from trying to get me to fanboy over everyone from Dex to Dix. I bond with characters based on the content of their character, not the content of their 23rd chromosome (or whichever one Who has his Y on). If you're rejecting Jackie on this ground, you are wrong to do so. Stop it.
(2) You didn't like the Sopranos in general, or Carmela in particular. I knew this was a red herring going in, since I'd seen Edie Falco in a little-known but gorgeous piece of John Sayles work called Sunshine State, and Edie was, if anything, even less Carm-like there than she is here. Jackie has a similar accent (which you'd expect from her living in the same metropolitan area as Toe-knee and fam), but other than that you will forget Carmela's hair, nails and passivity in about three seconds of screen time.
(3) The part I didn't know until I went searching for my new icon: Dr. Cooper, thus far Jackie's main foil in the cast, was also in Twilight. (Emily visibly shuddered when I brought up this possibility.) He's an actor, guys. If you could forgive Shatner for doing Incubus (and pretty much everything else he did OTHER than Star Trek or the Twilight Zone), you can get over this, too.
(4) It's only half an hour. I didn't understand this, either, but I can cope.
Back episodes are available for the converted. The TWoP recaps will help you catch up (and also introduce you to the All Saints Hospital Drinking Game- so far, it's just, when you see a nun, DRINK!) We have cake. (Blessedly, not THIS cake.)
Get your ass in here! Stat!
